Notes from Tel Aviv

Notes from Tel Aviv

I was invited to hold a solo exhibition of my photographs in Krakow, Poland, as part of the local Jewish Culture Festival opening there in late June 2017.

I am returning to Europe, to the roots of generations of my family. My mother's milk was laced with yearning for her hometown. She was in the Holocaust and lost her twin brother at the age of 20. My mother's milk was laced with love of life and mankind.

I am brining a new exhibition to Krakow, skillfully curated by Tamar Eisen. It focuses on southern Tel Aviv, and the Florentine neighborhood in particular, the streets of which I have been walking with my camera in recent years. It is Tel Aviv au naturale, with no aesthetic touch-ups or political correctness.

The images on display document human encounters, connections, and human touch between various populations. There, in the neglected, dusty south, I am able to touch life's beating heart with a naked lens. It is there that people from different backgrounds merge in the most natural way. In recent years I have come across a wide range of people – youngsters and manual laborers, immigrants and visitors. I bring the love of mankind within me to those places, and take it out to the streets. In the southern part of the town I was born in, I find a human space that touches me while allowing me to touch it back. I document little moments in time that depict connections between people. Moments of humanness.

I bring along with me trust, love of all mankind, and a deep faith that there is nothing greater than everyday life. Having been a press photographer for many years, as well as the news desk photo editor at one of Israel's most popular newspapers, Maariv, I adore this challenging form of photography, which requires me to find the gem hidden in a familiar, everyday moment. Far away from the drama that seems to have become the most important thing in our media-dominated culture.
